ABOUT DISA

Performing Arthroscopy requires a special set of Eye to Hand skills. To reach a proficient level requires extensive training which needs to be maintained. Training young surgeons, letting them handle instruments, often means that the maintenance of skills for the teacher is difficult. In order to facilitate training and maintenance, the DISA is introduced.

The DISA model is constructed from LEGO modules, easily available on the web, as well as in LEGO shops in most countries. In order to create a relevant environment for Veterinary Surgeons the construct is similar to the Carpal and Tarsocrural joints in horses.

By using the design, interns have reached a proficiency level, which is far higher than if they had been training on actual surgeries alone, in the same timeframe.

In the early days of arthroscopic surgery, most surgeons learnt by doing. This meant that there were differing levels of injuries incurred on the joints of our patients. With the development of arthroscopic surgery, this is not acceptable any more. The DISA model allows the senior surgeons to maintain skills, and young surgeons to be trained and self-train, to a level of proficiency minimizing the risk of collateral damage to actual joints in patients.

Meet DISA

Disa Stattin is the Surgical Intern for whom the construct was initially developed.

She is a graduate of LSMU in Lithuania in 2020. She has been at our practice since 2022 and is now well versed and competent in many aspects of Arthroscopy.

Meet the founder, Flemming

Flemming Winberg grew up in Sweden and went to Vet School in Denmark. He is a Veterinarian because he works with Horses, not the other way around.

Starting his career at Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 1984 he then embarked upon a journey to establish himself in the US, getting licensed in Ohio in 1988.

In the meantime, after a couple of years in Helsinge, Denmark, he then spent 23 years at the Regional Animal Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden as a surgeon and manager. He never looked back.

After a few years at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Uppsala, he went back into private practice with IVC/Evidensia at Stav, south of Stockholm in 2015.

Having performed almost 20.000 arthroscopies, he was then confronted with the dilemma of how to educate a successor which has led to the development of the DISA model.

His idols, mentors and teachers have among others, been Dr. Harry Pettersson, Dr James D. Smith of Hagyards, Dr Larry Bramlage of Rood&Riddle , Dr C. Wayne McIlwraith of Colorado State and Dr Jörg Auer of University of Zurich.

They have all set the example of teaching others to improve Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.
